Jain Journal is a peer-reviewed, open-access e-journal dedicated to publishing high quality academic research on all topics related to the study of Jainism. It publishes a wide range of academic material, including research articles, translations of texts from South Asian languages, studies of inscriptions, archaeological and ethnographic field reports, notes on archival research, book reviews, sacred site notes, biographical essays, bibliographical notes, museum notes, exhibition reviews, linguistic analyses, and other scholarly findings. The journal provides a forum for students and scholars of Jainism to contribute academic insights across a range of length and form. Authors retain the copyright to their articles.

Jain Journal was founded in 1966 at the Jain Bhawan in Kolkata as the first academic journal in English dedicated to the study of Jainism. In 2025, a new editorial board was established to oversee a revitalization of this important resource for Jain Studies. It is now co-published by Jain Bhawan in Kolkata, India, and the Jain Education and Research Foundation, USA.

Committed to intellectual openness, Jain Journal rejects all forms of dogmatism and instead upholds diverse perspectives, critical inquiry, and academic rigor, creating a space for constructive debate on contemporary issues in Jain Studies.

Articles will be published on a rolling basis throughout the year in electronic form (downloadable PDFs). Each year’s collection will constitute a single volume of Jain Journal. From time to time, articles may be grouped under specific thematic headings. Guest editors may be invited to curate special issues devoted to particular topics or areas of interest.
