Rajib Doogar
Trustee, Jain Bhawan

Rajib Doogar is a permanent Trustee of Jain Bhawan in Kolkata. An avowed devil’s advocate, he enjoys questioning and subverting conventional wisdoms. His preferred escapes from reality are building mathematical models of accounting, auditing phenomena, and reading science fiction and fantasy. More sober reading interests center on the keywords Bengal, India, Indian Music and Jainism. Being Sheherwali, besides a good argument, he loves mangoes, kheera kachoris and jamewar shawls.

Jain Bhawan, Kolkata, India

Jain Bhawan in Kolkata, India, is a long-standing philanthropic and scholarly institution founded in 1945 in the Burra Bazar area of Calcutta (Kolkata) by eminent members of the Jain community to disseminate Jain philosophy, literature, and humanistic values. It has played a pioneering role in Jain Studies, maintaining one of the most comprehensive libraries on Jainism with thousands of books and rare manuscripts and sponsoring academic activities such as seminars and symposia. Central to its research work are its three trilingual quarterly journals—Jain Journal (in English), Titthayara (in Hindi), and Śramaṇa (in Bengali). Over the decades these publications served as respected platforms for research on Jainism.

Jain Education and Research Foundation, USA

The Jain Education and Research Foundation (JERF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing scholarly understanding and public awareness of Jainism, one of India’s oldest religious traditions emphasizing the principles of non-violence, non-possessiveness, and non-one-sidedness. In April 2010, JERF made history by establishing the first endowed academic chair in Jain Studies in the United States—the Bhagwan Mahavir Professorship in Jain Studies at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami. This innovative endowment helped launch a comprehensive Jain Studies program that has since offered courses, lectures, exchange programs and research opportunities. Building on this pioneering effort, JERF later created a second endowed position in Jain Studies at the University of North Texas (UNT). In 2017 the foundation provided a major endowment to establish the Bhagwan Adinath Professorship in Jain Studies in UNT’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, further promoting academic engagement with Jain thought, cultural events, and scholarly research in the U.S.
